Conditional moments of the breakthrough curves of kinetically sorbing solutes

چکیده
We present a methodology for calculating the conditional temporal moments of kinetically sorbing solutes based on the conditional temporal moments of non-reactive tracers. The methodology is based on a Lagrangian description of solute transport in heterogeneous media, and it can be applied to a large variety of flow configurations and mass-transfer ratelimited processes. A stochastic approach is needed, as a deterministic description of the velocity field is usually not available. Conditioning the temporal moments on hydraulic conductivity or transmissivity measurements improves the accuracy and reduces the uncertainty in the results, as shown by a reduction in the variance of the travel time. We present results showing the effect of the geochemical parameters on the reduction in uncertainty obtained by conditioning.

Macroscopic behavior and random-walk particle tracking of kinetically sorbing solutes
Analytical expressions are derived for the zeroth, first, and second spatial moments of sorbing solutes that follow a linear reversible kinetic mass transfer model. We determine phase-transition probabilities and closed-form expressions for the spatial moments of a plume in both the sorbed and aqueous phases resulting from an arbitrary initial distribution of solute between the phases. This all...
متن کاملModeling plume behavior for nonlinearly sorbing solutes in saturated homogeneous porous media
Transport of a sorbing solute in a two-dimensional steady and uniform flow field is modeled using a particle tracking random walk method. The solute is initially introduced from an instantaneous point source. Cases of linear and nonlinear sorption isotherms are considered. Local pore velocity and mechanical dispersion are used to describe the solute transport mechanisms at the local scale. The ...
متن کاملCombined physical and chemical nonequilibrium transport model: analytical solution, moments, and application to colloids.
The transport of solutes and colloids in porous media is influenced by a variety of physical and chemical nonequilibrium processes. A combined physical-chemical nonequilibrium (PCNE) model was therefore used to describe general mass transport. The model partitions the pore space into "mobile" and "immobile" flow regions with first-order mass transfer between these two regions (i.e, "physical" n...
متن کاملEffect of flow-induced exchange in hyporheic zones on longitudinal transport of solutes in streams and rivers
[1] Temporary storage of solutes in streams is often controlled by flow-induced uptake in hyporheic zones. This phenomenon accounts for the tails that are generally observed following the passage of a solute pulse, and such exchange is particularly important for the transport of reactive substances that can be subject to various biogeochemical processes in the subsurface. Advective pumping, ind...
